This MLK day I got to take my first Laughter Yoga class at Interfusion Festival VIII (IF 2023) led by Sarah Lawson. It changed my life deeper than I ever could have expected. One of the many revelations I had after the class was over was this. You know how sometimes we just wish we could invite the person we're talking to into our minds so they could just see/feel our experience? And how frustrating it is sometimes when we're unable to put things into words to just be fully understood?
I now strongly believe that laughter and focused presence might just be that unique shared language. In the class, we were only allowed to use laughter sounds and pantomime to communicate with each other (like 80 strangers who have never met before) - and by the end of the 1.5 hr workshop we all became the bestest of friends, and had so many laughs, cries and meaningful connections. And basically no recognizable human language words exchanged with any of these people.
As adults, we don't allow ourselves to laugh nearly as much as our hearts are seeking to laugh. Is it any wonder then that our worlds are disconnected and our hearts are largely unheard?
What if we challenged ourselves to spend intentional daily time in "adult recess" and laugh with someone just so, without any reason? Not because someone entertained us or did something funny - simply to allow the creative energy of joy to course through our bodies instead of closing off from it?
Next time I see you, let's take a few minutes to simply laugh and be aimlessly silly - I'm so excited to see the depths in you that I wasn't able to see before.
"Sarah is a PHENOMENAL facilitator. She creates experiences that allow one to fully experience and move through the range of emotions and experiences, and builds so much community and connection. I absolutely and unequivocally recommend working with her!"
Sarah Lawson introduced me to laughter yoga, about five or six years ago. Not knowing what to expect, I was gleefully surprised at the simplistic, joyful silliness, and how effective it was at elevating my emotional state, social bonding, and physical energy levels. Sarah has a sweet casual way of sliding into the laughter and gently encouraging grown adults, even serious ones, to relax into play. As a facilitator, she leads discreetly, blending right into the crowd, and participates so genuinely.
